Onward Bound Academy: Challenging dog studies
What is it?
Programs for working with an aggressive, reactive, and/or fearful dog requiring a personalized, behavior consultation and training for challenging and severe behavioral problems. What does it help with? Fears, phobias, leash reactivity, and all types of aggression. Behavior issues are often heartbreaking to deal with, and they can create serious conflicts within the home and the community. The good news? Many, if not most dogs with serious behavior problems can be helped with an in-depth behavior modification program carried out by a certified professional dog trainer. We have the education, experience, and qualifications to accurately evaluate the problem and provide solutions. We then set achievable goals so you can start seeing success right away. Fear and anxiety are the number one cause of aggression. Poor training can turn a small concern into a dangerous situation. Don't hesitate, we are here to help. |
How does it work?
Step 1. Initial consult. We meet and take a detailed behavioral history (this can be done virtually), observe and evaluate your dog, and identify the problems. We get to know you and how your dog's behavior has impacted your life and you learn what is causing your dog's behaviors and what steps we will take to resolve the problem.
Step 2. The training. In private lessons we meet for subsequent behavior modification training sessions and work with you and your dog until the program is complete. With our drop off options we take the leash and work with your dog directly with weekly mini lessons for you, in board and train you are given weekly updates through phone or video chats. With our targeted training plan we can make your lives better. This unwanted behavior doesn't need to continue, you can start to see a difference in just five minutes of daily training.
Step 3. Hands on lessons. Good training comes down to reading your dog in the moment and your mechanical skills. Hands on lessons are a chance for you to work directly with your dog's triggers (other dogs, people, bikes, etc). You will learn in the moment as an experienced trainer coaches you and the helper team provides appropriate distraction.
Step 4. Support. Rehabilitating a dog with aggressive behavior can be a life long project. Many of our students see huge progress. The final lesson is done in your home for a coached walk around your neighborhood. You and your dog can then maintain and continue to improve by attending group classes. Living with challenging dogs can be very isolating, we have a quarterly group get together to support and connect with each other hosted by one of our trainers.
